Music Theory is the study of musical knowledge and understanding of the way music works and is written down. Starting with the basic rhythm, notes and musical symbols students study through the grades 1-8 learning about harmony, counterpoint and the concepts behind composition.
Certain exam boards insist that students obtain Grade 5 Music Theory before they can apply for a performance exam at grade 6 and above.
Music Theory classes generally guide students through the knowledge and skills needed to pass music theory exams. These classes do not teach students how to play any kind of musical instrument.
Music theory classes take place on Thursdays and Saturdays. You can apply to join a course at all levels and ages. They cover the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) syllabus for music theory up to and including Grade 5.
Please go to our Costs and Payment page for up to date prices.
Before applying for a theory class please ensure you have read our terms and conditions.

Once we have received your application we will contact you with further information, including how you can pay.
