Check if you need planning permission

Find out what type of planning approval you need for your project, when you can complete works under permitted development, and the planning process for installing solar panels.

When you need to apply for planning permission

If your project doesn’t fit into permitted development or prior approval you’ll need to make a planning application.

You’ll need Householder Planning Permission for most types of work.

However, you may need to complete the form for Full Planning Permission if you want to do the following:

  • do work on a flat
  • change the use of a building
  • build something new

You can use the Planning Portal for guidance on common building work projects for the home.

Other consents you may need

You’ll usually need Listed building consent for any works to a listed building. It is a criminal offence to undertake works that require listed building consent without the right consent.

You can find out when you need to apply for listed building consent on the planning portal.

Building control permission

Building regulation approval is different from planning permission and you may need both for your project.

After you’ve got planning approval for your project and before you start any building work, you'll need to notify building control.

You should check if you need to apply for building regulations approval.
