Protected trees
Check if a tree is protected, apply for permission to work on a protected tree, request to protect a tree and find out how to contact us if you think unauthorised work is taking place on a protected tree.
Unauthorised work on protected trees
We can take legal action against anyone working on a protected tree without permission and where an exemption does not apply.
Find out if someone has permission
You can:
- ask the landowner or contractor carrying out the work to show you a copy of the Council Decision Notice which grants them permission to work on the tree
- view the planning history of the location to see if permission has been granted
If you think the tree works are unauthorised
Contact us urgently by calling 020 8547 5000 if you see unauthorised work taking place. We may be able to attend quickly enough to stop more work from happening.
If the work has already happened, you can report it to us by contacting the Tree Officer using the general enquires form.
