Trading Standards
Trading Standards helps protect consumers from scams and rogue trading. Get free, confidential advice and raise complaints through the Citizens Advice helpline, and find out how to make a complaint.
How we promote a fair and safe trading environment
We aim to maintain a fair and safe trading environment for businesses and consumers in our borough. We do this by:
- advising local businesses on how Trading Standards' laws affect their businesses and on the measures they need to take to comply with them
- auditing trader premises to make sure they comply with Trading Standards law
- carrying out projects and surveys in areas where a Trading Standards problem has been identified or is suspected
- sampling and testing products, in particular those imported or manufactured by our businesses to ensure that they meet the relevant compositional or safety standards
- checking the accuracy of equipment used for trade (eg scales, petrol pumps, pub optics, weighbridges, packing machines)
- raising awareness of Trading Standards law, highlighting problems and offering practical advice through the media and partner agencies
- investigating complaints (although we cannot investigate all complaints)

- weights and measures
