Get support with a physical disability

If you have a physical disability, there is lots of help available for you in Kingston. This might come from charities, our partner organisations, or from us as a council.

What we cannot help with

We cannot help with diagnosing a condition or giving treatment for a medical problem. You’ll need to contact your GP instead who can refer you to the best specialist healthcare service from the NHS.

Kingston is home to many organisations with a range of services that can help you get the most out of life, such as:

• information, advice and support from Kingston Centre for Independent Living (KCIL)
• support and advocacy for adult and young carers from Kingston Carers Network
• inclusive exercise and sports opportunities on Connected Kingston
• services and activities for people with a physical disability on Connected Kingston

Support with sight and hearing loss

Our dedicated sight and hearing service can give specialist advice if you’re experiencing sight or hearing loss.

Help getting around

There are lots of different kinds of support to help disabled people get around with a car or using public transport, including:

• Blue Badges to park closer to shops and facilities like doctors
• disabled parking bays to get on-street parking on your road if you have a Blue Badge
• Freedom Passes for free public transport
• other accessible travel options such as dial-a-ride

Care technology

Care technology, also known as telecare, is sensors or alarms to help you stay safe in your home. You can use them to call for help from a family member or friend, or to contact emergency services.

Contact our occupational therapy team for advice about equipment or home adaptations. They can offer you an assessment, give advice or provide equipment to help you remain independent at home and within your local community.

Find out if you’re eligible for social care

If you think you might need ongoing care and support from social services, you can answer some questions to find out if you qualify for care paid for or partly paid for by us. If you qualify, we’ll recommend you have a care needs assessment.
