Black history in Kingston

Kingston has a rich black history and one that we are extremely proud of which has helped shape our borough. Find out about Black and Asian British people's roles in the local community throughout history.

People of Black and Asian origins are documented to have lived or worked in the present day Kingston area since at least the 16th century. The Kingston Parish register dated 22 December 1577, mentions ‘a child of black Richards, a stranger’, buried in Kingston-upon-Thames.

You can find out more about our black history at our libraries, museum and history centre.
