Introduction to course

You will learn real-world skills to help you use English more effectively in the workplace or daily life. These courses are available at Entry, Level 1, and Level 2 levels. At the end of the course you will gain a certificate which is highly valued by employers. Functional skills English can also be a gateway to many vocational courses such as childcare and teaching assistant, and is a progression route onto a GCSE English course at Kingston Adult Education. We know that not everyone had the best time at school, and for many of us, the idea of returning to learning as an adult can be worrying. Our tutors understand this and offer support and guidance throughout. As part of your course, you will learn study skills to help you gain new confidence in your abilities.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to use language appropriately for different situations such as when at work or with friends. Learn how to speak more clearly and confidently. Improve your reading skills with a variety of different types of text. Learn spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction to help you write with better accuracy. Practice different styles of writing such as formal letters, emails and forms You will also learn study skills and exam skills to help you achieve success.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be aged 19 or over (as at 31st August 2025) and be a UK resident. There will be homework and self-study assignments. Please be sure you will have enough time each week to attend all classes and to complete the homework assignments outside of class. You will also need a basic level of digital skills in order to access the online elements of the course.
