How we plan for an emergency

Kingston's emergency plan

We maintain a 24 hour response to emergencies. Our response to any emergency can easily be increased or decreased (it's scalable) and resources can be activated quickly. 

Our emergency plan means we are prepared to deal with emergencies that may affect large numbers of people, such as:

• a major transport accident
• a major fire
• flooding
• terrorist activities
• gas explosions
• severe weather

Our role during emergencies includes:

• leading the recovery and restoration to normality (working with businesses and community groups)
• providing temporary emergency shelter and accommodation
• providing welfare and practical support (eg food, personal supplies)
• providing information to the public and working with news and media groups
• organising road closures, diversions and other highways duties
• specialist advice, eg environmental health problems or building surveys
• clean up and waste management work
• working with voluntary and faith organisations

London's emergency plans

The London Resilience Partnership develops emergency plans for the Greater London Authority. The Partnership is made up of more than 170 organisations including the NHS, transport providers and the military.

The group is ready to work together to help minimise the impacts of a major emergency. They assess what risks London faces and make plans to respond to those risks. The London Resilience Partnership has plans and protocols showing how they would deal with the impacts of different incidents. These plans are tested during multi-agency exercises and regularly updated.
