Inclusive cycling

Cycling should be accessible and possible for everyone, regardless of age, disability or experience. In addition to our Aiming High programme in local schools, there are a number of other organisations providing cycling sessions, detailed in this section.

Aiming High

The Kingston cycle training team runs specialist cycle skills activities for SEND children in local schools under the Aiming High Short Breaks programme funded by Achieving for Children (AfC).

The training is offered in small group or one-to-one ratios to SEND children and young people who are unable to learn how to ride a bike in a large group and cannot, therefore, benefit from the standard Bikeability Level 1 and 2 courses. These sessions are usually planned during school and allows a Learning Support Assistant to attend if necessary.

Funding eligibility criteria for children accessing the short service is as follows:

• Children need to fulfill the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) definition of SEN   
• Children must attend a school in Kingston
• Children must be aged between 9-12 years.

Inclusive cycling organisations

Wheels For All Kingston

Wheels for All is an Inclusive Cycling programme that embraces all children and adults with disabilities and differing needs to engage with quality cycling activity, using adapted cycles such as handcycles, trikes and wheelchair transporter to assist in building confidence and independence in cycling. Sessions are run from the Kingston Weir Archer Athletics Track, Kingston Road.

Kingston Association for the Blind

Kingston Association for the Blind helps to pair up volunteer front tandem riders with visually impaired back riders that want to go out cycling.

Companion Cycling

A local community resource helping people with special needs to enjoy the fun of cycling in Bushey Park.

Cycling For All Sutton

The Cycling for All network is set up to provide more cycling opportunities for people in London with disabilities and health conditions. The nearest location to Kingston is Ecolocal Cycling based at the David Weir Leisure Centre in Carshalton.

Wheels4Me London

Wheels4Me London is a free bicycle loan service for people whose needs aren't met by most standard bicycle hire schemes.

Cycling projects

Cycling Projects is a national UK cycling charity which promotes inclusive cycling through a range of successful community engagement programmes that give people the opportunity to cycle on a regular basis; through help, support and guidance. The nearest location to Kingston is Epsom & Ewell Wheels For All based at the Harrier Centre in Epsom.
