Empty, new or altered properties
Find out what you have to pay for properties that are empty, and how to tell us about new, altered or demolished properties.
New, altered or demolished properties
If you are building a new property, altering an existing dwelling or demolishing a property please let us know. We may visit and review dwellings that are being built or altered. Evidence such as photographs may be obtained to enable us to make the right decision, which we report to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).
New Properties
If you are building a new property or development please tell us:
- Property Address
- Your full name
- Developers name and contact details
- Purchase/completion date or start date of tenancy
We will issue a Council Tax Completion Notice once the building works are nearly finished.
If the property is already occupied, we ask the VOA to enter the property onto the Valuation List from the date the dwelling became occupied.
Altered Properties
Contact us if you are making changes to your property, including if you are:
- dividing your property into flats
- merging a number of flats into one property
- converting your property into a house of multiple occupation (HMO)
- adding a freestanding or interlinked annexe to your property
We report these changes to the VOA.
Demolished Properties
You will need to make a proposal to the VOA by completing this proposal form. This form should be used if your property is:
- derelict
- undergoing major renovation
- demolished
VOA Council Tax Proposal to alter the valuation list form
Please be aware that Council Tax remains due and payable until the VOA removes the property from the Valuation List.
Street Naming and Numbering
Street Naming and Numbering is the process by which streets and properties are allocated official addresses and ensures each address is unique. All new developments must be officially named or numbered, and existing properties that are being converted must be re-named and/or re-numbered. As a developer or owner you must register postal addresses to avoid confusion in the event of an emergency and to receive mail, deliveries, utilities and other services.
